Line Probe Assay [LPA] in DR-TB Diagnosis

As per the Integrated Drug-resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB) Diagnostic Algorithm:

  • Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAAT) are preferred for the initial detection of Rifampicin (R) resistance
  • Line Probe Assays (LPA) are preferred for the detection of Isoniazid (H), Fluoroquinolones (FQ) and second-line injectable (SLI) drugs resistance.

When rifampicin resistance is detected by NAAT (see figure below):

NTEP State Drug Store [SDS] Structure and Functions

Each state needs to have one fully operational State Drug Store (SDS) for every 5 crores of population. In larger states/difficult terrain, more than one SDS can be established as per National Tuberculosis (TB) Elimination Program (NTEP) guidelines.

It is responsible for effective management of medicines and other logistics and ensuring uninterrupted supply of good quality 1st & 2nd line anti-TB medicines for adult and paediatric patients.

Linkages to Social Welfare Schemes

The government of India introduced Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to ensure that the benefits and subsidies are reaching the beneficiaries directly and to fasten the process. Through the process, money is directly transferred to the beneficiaries' bank account keeping the intermediary agencies and stakeholders only to manage the process of payment.

National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) transfers all benefits to patients using the two systems:

  • Nikshay
  • Public Finance Management System (PFMS)
