Presumptive Paediatric TB
Learning ObjectivesDefine Presumptive Paediatric TB
Discuss consequences of identification.
In Paediatric TB patients (0–18 years) - diagnosis is difficult and different in comparison to TB occurring in adult patients.
Tuberculosis in paediatric cases is mainly due to failure of TB control in adults. Because of a less-developed immune system, children under 5 years of age are more prone to develop the disease mostly within 2 years following infection. The commonest age of childhood TB disease is 1 to 4 years. Young age is a risk factor for spread of disease to other parts of the body, i.e. dissemination.
